“Our lives can only be interpreted in retrospect, yet must be lived from day to day, blindly. What folly, the human condition!” – Joyce Carol Oates, The Accursed

Curses, Supernatural forces and vampires are usually not the ingredients that would encourage me to read a book. I picked up The Accursed after reading Stephen King’s review in the New York Times.

The Accursed is set in the turn of the Century Princeton, a quiet town populated by genteel bookish souls until a dark and dangerous force infects its residents. A powerful curse besets the elite families of Princeton. It combines beautiful historical details with supernatural elements. Woodrow Wilson, Upton sinclair, Jack London and Teddy Roosevelt paths cross and i had to google for hours to verify the most unbelievable actions of her characters.

A pure joy.
